Flavor Your Life: European Olive Oil

Grilling is my favorite way to cook during the summertime. I love not having to heat up my kitchen just as much as I love the fresh, delicious flavors of grilled foods. One of my favorite side dishes is simple grilled vegetables. When you're making such a simple meal with basic ingredients like fresh vegetables, the oils and seasonings used along with them are equally as important as the freshness of the ingredients.

My go-to oil is olive oil. I've read in the past about how some store bought olive oils are actually a blend of other oils and not truly, pure olive oil. Now that I know that, I make it a point to find really good, pure oil. Olive oil comes from the plant of European olives. When you see "extra virgin" olive oil, it is made without using chemicals or heat to extract the oil and is the freshest possible version.

Pure, true European olive oils are judged by expert taste-testers...which probably doesn't matter a lot to my children, but, being a foodie myself, I love really good, delicious ingredients.

Another "pro" of extra virgin olive oil is that it has a high smoke point. When it comes to grilling over an open flame this is important because I don't have to worry about overly smoky or burnt food. It's incredibly versatile and can handle any method of cooking. I've even baked using olive oil before and it works incredibly well.

Grilled Vegetables

  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 1 package mini portabello mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 1 package mini bell peppers (about 10-12 peppers)
  • (other veggies like asparagus, zucchini, squash, potatoes, etc.) 
  • 1/4 cup European extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • salt + pepper to taste

Preheat your grill to medium heat. Place your vegetables in a metal grill pan. Place grill pan on the hot grill. Lightly drizzle with olive oil while tossing the vegetables to coat completely. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt and pepper. 

Turn periodically and grill until the vegetables are softened and slightly charred on the edges. Serve alongside grilled meat, potatoes, or even on top of salads.
