I remember nearly every year of my childhood, my dad would bring us each a small gift on Valentine's morning. He worked nights and it was fun to see what gifts he would leave at each of our places at the table when we got up that morning. I remember it being a small stuffed animal sometimes and candy others. We frequently received giant Hershey's Kisses that were nearly impossible to actually eat! I really loved that small gesture from him that let us kids know that he was thinking of us too.
Since becoming a parent, I enjoy passing on a very similar tradition with my boys. When Mason was smaller, I would pick up a fun little stuffed animal for him and some safe candy, and following the tradition, it would be at his spot for breakfast on Valentine's Day morning. The past few years I have found fun little themed toys (like Superheroes) that he enjoys. I am excited this year to begin the tradition with Dawson too!
It's also great that Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday this year. I really enjoy making a sweet and special breakfast on holidays and it will make it that much easier if we're not rushing around to get out the door!
Along with our festive and allergy-friendly heart-shaped chocolate chip pancakes (courtesy of Enjoy Life Foods) we're having heart-shaped bacon, strawberries, Berry Bubbly Gelatin Bites, and this sweet little mocktail to top it all off. This recipe is for the kid-friendly version, but feel free to switch it up and use champagne to make an adult mimosa!
Berry Fizz Mocktail
- 1/2 cup mixed berry fruit juice
- 1 cup sparkling white grape juice (or champagne if making for adults)
- frozen berries or grapes (optional)
Pour 1/4 cup fruit juice of choice into two champagne flutes or other glasses. Top each with 1/2 cup sparkling white grape juice. Add a couple of frozen berries or grapes to each glass to keep cold without watering down the drink. Add festive straws and serve!
